


The consequence of this is that the plaintext history of all user’s conversations is stored on Telegram’s servers, forever, until deleted by the user.

This is unlike many other secure messaging apps, such as Signal, WhatsApp, and Threema. In order to encrypt a Telegram conversation, a user must manually initiate a “secret chat” by going into settings. But is Telegram secure from intrusion, or will it be used against ordinary citizens? With the Russian invasion of Ukraine starting this past week, many Ukrainians are turning to Telegram, a widely popular messaging app created by Pavel Durov, to organize and share information to resist the invasion.
